Friday!?

Filed under: Life, Uncategorized — Jay Hanson @ 1:42 pm

Well it is Friday afternoon. I suspect that phrase conjures up a different feelings in the pit of a pastor’s stomach than it does for those who are not pastors. I think Friday’s are different for Pastors than for non-Pastors. Not better or worse, just different.

My wife went out of town for the weekend with a friend to go skiing. I have 20 people coming over tonight for a party and due perhaps to poor choices on my part; I still have two talks to write before Sunday. The point being that Friday seldom symbolizes “It is finished”, but most often represents it is all about to be “upon you”.

So while my plan is to take Friday’s off I am generally caught in the inevitable dilema to attempt to finish work and I end up here at the office. Yet there is still something about Friday’s that is impossible to completely escape. It is in the air I think.

I spent the early morning hours with God and then was joined by some close friends. I spent most of the rest of the morning simply visiting with another friend. Oh our meeting began about “church work” stuff, but soon we were sharing our hearts. We were pulling for each other and speaking life and hope to one another. He shared his struggle that he felt that much of what he did didn’t matter and had no lasting effect. I found it hard to image that he could feel that way and then it hit me. Maybe what I do matters more than I realize. Maybe we are all making more of a difference that we are aware. Maybe people really do read my blog.

Magnum P.I. once said, “The best way to know yourself is to look in a mirror and the best mirror of your self is your friends.”  If I turn out as good as my friends I will be very pleased.

Make a friend this weekend by being a friend.

  2. Wow, a preacher that quotes Magnum, P.I.!

What you do does matter. I realize it more when I am NOT around you if that makes any sense at all. Just know people do notice, and people DO read your blog. I would even go so far as to say I look forward to it, espcially when it is short and sweet and comes from the heart like this post did.

Watching you struggle sometimes helps my struggle too. If someone I respect this much struggles, then maybe it is okay if I do also.

Is anything I say making any sense to anyone but me? :-) Maybe you can explain what I am saying to me Jay….!

  4. I know what you mean about Fridays …I experience that on Sundays during the school year: lesson plans, papers, etc. compete with worship and family time. I know the reality is that work has to be done.

I’ve been reflecting on “Present the Gospel in everything you do & use words when necessary.” A couple of Fridays ago, I witnessed this in you as you played with your kids on the beach. Your enjoyment in playing with your family, taking time to have fun, committment to time with them.. spoke volumes! Yes, we make more of a difference than we know!

  6. Hey Jay:

Just checking in on your blog. I don’t preach every Sunday but on the weekends when I do, I can certainly identify with you about how this effects your weekend. It’s both a burden and a priveledge.

I wonder sometimes if we could only see what the Holy Spirit is doing everyday, both in us and through us, we would be blown away by how he uses our feeble efforts to impact the lives of our friends, and even strangers.

By the way, anyone who quotes Magnum P.I. is alright by me.

  9. I never read your blog either, but I know it is meaningful when the Magnum quotes start flowing. Much love to my good friend. God is amazing in how he uses US to make the differences that only he can make. Isn’t it a great thing to be a part of God’s work?

  10. jay-

that period of time when you were sporting a mustache is really starting to make sense to me now. and i never would have predicted that if i were to check out the chapel’s web-site one random evening that i might stumble onto your blog…wow. i guess it’s true–whether your in the pool or outside the pool, you’re still pretty.

there’s enough deep thought to hold the attention of your readers for quite some time.
